Peace Fund Radio #196

Children don’t have to be homeless to be hungry. On today’s show, Adrian Paul and Ethan Dettenmaier and I honor Hunger Action Month by defining food insecurity, examining how hunger affects kids physically and academically, and inviting YOU to help families in need in your own community and beyond!

When previous Peace Fund Hero Will Lourcey spoke at the Montessori School of Fort Worth, 5-year-old Miles Umscheid heard Will’s message loudly and clearly… and hatched a plan. His “Meals for Miles” project (“because I’m Miles, and I collected meals from miles away!”) more than doubled his original goal by donating 2,201 cans to the families served by the Tarrant Area Food Bank! In today’s Hero of the Week segment, Miles and his mom, Matty, join us to share their family’s inspiring story.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! Adrian Paul and Ethan Dettenmaier and I report the latest statistics and tackle the staggering disparity in research funding between adult and child cancers.

From the time she was just 4 years old, Alexandra Flynn Scott raised more than a million dollars to battle the cancer that claimed her life at 8. Today, Alex’s family continues what she began… with more than $130 million raised in her name by Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. In our Hero of the Week segment, Liz Scott celebrates her daughter’s inspirational legacy and tells us how their Scientific Advisory Board helps ALSF find the research projects they fund!
